The rich history of the picturesque Oudeschans shines again in the Fortress museum.
Not only Oudeschans, but the surrounding entrenchments on both sides of the border (Grensland-Schansenland) are shown, as this is the region where the 80-year war with Spain in 1568 began. The fascinating history with much war violence comes alive through the hundreds of utensils that were found during archeological excavations in the fortress.
Together with the richly decorated pottery and glass household articles tens of complete stored shoes and mules can be seen in the showcases. You can also find military articles found in the ground, like weapons and cannonballs. The museum gives you a good idea of how people lived and worked in a fortress in the 17th and 18th century.
