Museum Steam Pumping Station
Winschoten – Distance approx. 34 km
Of the hundreds of steam pumping stations that used to keep the Netherlands dry, only nine have been preserved.
Of these Museum Steam Pumping Station Winschoten has been given a unique place as auger steam pumping station. It is the only one preserved of the 120 steam pumping stations in the province of Groningen.
The steam pumping station was shut down in 1971, because the pumping station Hongerige Wolf (Hungry Wolf) took over her function. Since 1978 the building and its Machine are a state monument and between 1983 and 1988 the complex was renovated. In 1983 the Foundation for preservation of the Groninger Steam Tools has the management of the pumping station and has made it into a museum.
A group of enthusiastic volunteers meticulously look after the good condition of this unique industrial heritage.
